Autotest.         7 May 2006.                           Organiser’s report (by John Thornton).

Despite the thoroughly wet conditions, 11 Selby DMC club members took part in the club’s first autotest of 2006.

There were 4 tests, and given the wet conditions and the number of competitors, only time to run them once each (following a practice run of the first test). I had set the tests up a couple of weeks earlier in dry conditions, but the rain and standing water had made a huge difference to the available grip i.e. there wasn’t any. The day became something of a mud-fest, and Paul Scaife’s rwd Chevette came to a standstill on occasion while attempting to drive around the central ‘roundabout’ bollard. Meanwhile, following the first test, Alastair changed to more suitable tyres and these combined with the rally-spec 309’s LSD gave rise to some fastest times, or thereabouts, but additional penalties quashed hopes of a win. Without either intending or expecting to, I took fastest time overall, probably because I was more familiar with the Renault’s handling and the tests themselves.

This light-hearted event was enjoyed by all and we expect that more autotests will be taking place during the summer, and, hopefully, in drier conditions.

Thanks to James Johns for providing the fuel for the Renault.
